Eye color is largely controlled by two key genes (OCA2 and HERC2). Brown is dominant over green, and green is dominant over blue. This tool uses a simplified two-phenotype inheritance chart based on the parents' expressed colors. For example, two brown-eyed parents have about a 75% chance of a brown-eyed baby, an 18.75% chance of green, and a 6.25% chance of blue. Blue-eyed parents almost always have a blue-eyed baby, but rare genetic surprises (about 1%) keep things interesting.

Why do many babies' eyes change? Melanin production ramps up over the first 6–12 months. Many babies born with blue or grey eyes slowly develop their permanent color — so the chart predicts the likely adult eye color, not necessarily the color at birth.
